Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) will return to The Shops at Westshore on May 4-5, 2018 for their annual Fiesta. This year’s event will feature ethnic food, craft vendors, car show, and Latino musical acts and performers that bring everyone to their feet. There will also be amusement rides and activities for youth, and for the adults, the On the Border Beer Tent!
Thanks to a grant from Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, LAUP is excited to be able to bring international Tex-Mex musician, Dwayne Verheyden, to Fiesta 2018. Dwayne and his band will kick off Fiesta celebrations on May 4th from 6-9PM at The Shops at Westshore venue.
Dwayne Verheyden was born September 4, 1991 in Montfort, a small village in the south of The Netherlands. At a very early age, it appeared that music was his true passion, and because his father listened to the genre frequently, Dwayne took a fancy to Tex-Mex music and its accordion sound.
After winning the “de Sjeng” Award in 2007 at the age of 16, things kept getting better and better for Dwayne Verheyden. On Tex-Mex King Flaco Jiménez’s advice, Dwayne started his own group in 2009.
In 2010, they recorded their first album in San Antonio (TX), in cooperation with Flaco Jiménez and Max Baca (USA), and in 2012, their second album was released by Hans Kusters Music (HKM). In September 2014, Dwayne won the Tejano Music Award for “Best New Artist – Group” 2014. He is the first European to win this award.
The group has had international success in Switzerland, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, Estonia, Spain and especially in the US and Mexico. Dwayne has performed as a special guest with the biggest names of his genre: Flaco Jiménez, Los Lobos, Chris Jagger, Texas Tornados, Ramon Ayala, etc. He also recorded a viral YouTube video for Flaco Jiménez and performed on one of the biggest TV shows in Mexico: “Sabadazo”.
