In partnership with the Hope College Center for Diversity and Inclusion and the Hope College Latino Student Organization, Director Scott Boehm and Cast will be discussing their film about two DREAMers who are graduate students at Michigan State University, “What Happens to a Dream Deferred” is an intimate portrait of a day in the life of José Adrián Badillo Carlos and Osvaldo Sandoval after the Trump administration’s decision to rescind the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.

The movies for this evening will be focusing on the telling of stories in Latin American Film and the power of cultural exchanges within Latin American cultures.
Short Film #1: My Migration (Mi Migración) acts as a visual metaphor for human migration and attempts to further explore the workings of this universal movement. It examines the reasoning behind this natural development while ultimately aiming to showcase the many struggles encountered during such transition.

Short Film #2: Misappropriation is a tale about how everything that makes you happy can disappear in the blink of an eye. One moment of distraction is enough for our life to end up in the hands of a destiny that was not ours … or maybe yes.

Feature Film: Conexiones: Los Cenzontles In Cuba. A Musical Journey of Connection is a documentary chronicling the 2016 tour of Cuba by Mexican American roots group Los Cenzontles. Conexiones captures a unique glimpse into Cuban cultural life during an historic time of openness between the United States and Cuba. Los Cenzontles were granted rare access to perform traditional Mexican music in four cities around Cuba where they engaged with Cuban musicians from a variety of walks of life. There they discovered the richness of Cuban culture and Cuba’s deep affection for and fascination with Mexican culture. The film is a poignant statement on the importance of cultural exchange, identity and openness at a time of uncertainty in U.S, Cuban relations.
